FAQ
What if I/my child am/are unable to attend one of the mandatory events?
Although we ask that students and their parents attend the three major events for the program, we understand that some circumstances may prevent this. If there is a major conflict or an emergency where the student and/or one parent are unable to attend the event we ask that the family contact the LSF office IN ADVANCE to discuss the conflict.
I have more than one child in an independent/parochial school. Can they all apply to the program?
We encourage siblings to apply for the program. We understand that having more than one child in a private or independent school increases the financial burden for the family. We cannot guarantee, however, that all members of a family will be accepted into the program. Students are evaluated individually based on merit.
What is the timeline for application and acceptance to the Scholars Program?
Applications for the LSF Scholars Program become available in January and are normally due at the end of April. At this time, most independent and parochial schools have made any admissions and financial aid decisions that are needed in order to fill out the LSF application. Applications are evaluated throughout May and letters are mailed to all families the first week of June.
When will LSF Scholars Program applications be posted online?
LSF Scholars Program applications are posted online and available for distribution from the office in early January.
When will we be notified as to whether or not my child was accepted?
Notification letters are mailed to each child’s family during the first week of June.
Are all qualified students accepted to the Scholars Program?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept all qualified students. Our funds are limited and we consistently receive more applications than we can possibly fund. Your child’s rejection is not always an indication of the quality of their application but our own lack of resources.
My child was denied but was encouraged to reapply. What does this mean?
If your child was denied admission to the Scholars Program but we indicated that he/she is encouraged to reapply, it means that we felt your child was a strong candidate for the program but that our own limited resources did not allow us to extend admission to him/her. It does not mean that your child will be guaranteed admission in any subsequent years but it does mean that we encourage them to reenter the applicant pool again.
Does my child have to live in the DC metropolitan area?
While the LSF serves the Washington, DC metropolitan area, all students and families must reside in Washington, DC, suburban Maryland, or Northern Virginia in order to be eligible for our programs.
My child does not receive financial aid from his or her school; can they still apply to the Latino Student Fund? What other resources are there for students attending independent and parochial schools?
No. One of the requirements for the LSF Scholars Program is that a student receives some amount of financial aid directly from their school or the Archdiocese. A student must continue to receive aid as long as they attend their school in order to continue to receive scholarships from the LSF.
There are many other resources for finding tuition assistance for independent and parochial schools. Please see our Additional Financial Aid Resources page for a list of organizations.
